Assignment

From Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei, the journey of Hedley, his wife and his daughter Katie began. Thirty years ago, the trip started to be one of the unforgettable moments in Hedley’s family’s life.

The destination was the Niah  Caves, East Malaysia. They did this trip with kinds of transportation such as the car, a huge ferry and a small boat. The trip had two stopping occasions. They crossed two large rivers by the huge ferry then had to stop to get their lunch. From Miri they went heading to Niah. It was getting dark so Hedley’s family hired someone with his boat to lead them and sailed upriver to the government rest house. It was night so they had to sleep in the rest house, sharing with a group of people who lived there.

The next morning, and to reach the caves they should go across a jungle in a walk for half an hour. They reached the cave; it was smelly and dark. Hedley’s family were lucky because they saw men who climbed up tall bamboo poles. These men were gathering up bird nests from the roof of the cave to sell these nests to the Chinese market that will make of it a soup called bird nest soup. The cave was slippery and to see what is around they had flashlights.

In the afternoon they started packing up for the return journey, after they thanked their new friends they met in the rest house. At the end it was an unforgettable trip.
